I wanted to take a moment to share another side of River’s Bend Psychology. One of my passions that I don’t get to do as much as the owner of a small private practice is to teach. In the past I have taught undergraduate courses, didactic courses for trainees, and supervised Interns and Postdocs in psychology. I love teaching!
Recently I have had the opportunity to begin reintroducing teaching and training into my job description. Together with a colleague, Dr. Alexia Spanos, I have been able to provide multiple trainings to psychologists and therapists across the state of Oregon. Last week, Dr. Spanos and I presented on Treatment of Anxiety Disorders using Exposure Therapy. This is a topic close to my heart as I feel not only do many consumers not know about Exposure Therapy, but also many practicing therapists are unaware or untrained in this area.
Teaching other mental health professionals about what I do is exciting. The research supporting the use of Exposure Therapy is strong and the research outcomes should inspire hope for many clients. Past trainings I have led have focused specifically on Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, another treatment modality that is under-represented despite its strong evidence basis. This past week, we shared research and clinical applications of interventions for Phobias, Social Anxiety, Health Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.
If you are a potential client and want to learn more about treatment for any of these disorders or if you are professional seeking consultation or training for yourself or your organization, please do not hesitate to reach out to learn more about why Exposure Therapy works and why such a simple intervention can be so profound.
